Productive Financial Inclusion

Financial inclusion tells us whether people and enterprises can participate in financial systems. Productive Financial Inclusion asks what happens after that participation begins.

Framework in development

What is Productive Financial Inclusion?

Productive Financial Inclusion is the flagship research programme within Productive Inclusion. It examines when and under what conditions financial access and usage translate into productive investment, enterprise growth, resilience and economic capability.

Finance is one mechanism within the broader question of what allows people and enterprises to participate more productively in an economy.

Core question

Under what conditions does financial participation translate into sustainable productive economic outcomes?

The developing framework

The framework is being developed around four conditions. They are proposed analytical conditions rather than a validated equation, and no numeric score is produced.

01

Capability

Can the enterprise or individual deploy resources productively?

02

Finance Fit

Is the financial resource appropriate for the productive constraint?

03

Market Opportunity

Is there viable demand into which productive capacity can expand?

04

Enabling Environment

Do infrastructure, institutions and rules allow productive exchange to occur?

Financial Health

A sustainability guardrail ensuring that apparent growth is not being achieved through unsustainable financial distress.

Methodological statement

The framework synthesises established evidence from financial inclusion, enterprise finance, firm capability, market access and enabling-environment research. Its proposed architecture remains subject to empirical testing and refinement.

Evidence

Sierra Leone is the first applied evidence base currently being developed for this work.
